Black Mask and Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan Kenobi

The team assembles, and Ewan McGregor appears as Black Mask, in new photos from the set of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Starring Margot Robbie as her popular Suicide Squad character, one Harley Quinn, Birds of Prey brings together a crew of female DC characters including Huntress, Black Canary and Cassandra Cain.

Birds of Prey is currently in the process of filming, with Cathy Yan behind the camera as director, and there have already been loads of set leaks giving fans their first unofficial glimpses of what the movie has in store. Among these previous leaks were a first look at Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and another one affording a sneak peak of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. Of course, the main attraction continues to be Robbie, whose somewhat revamped Harley Quinn look has been teased in several of the leaked photo sets as well as an official first look.

Now, fans have gotten their first look at another key character from Birds of Prey, McGregor’s Black Mask. In the latest round of leaks coming via Hollywood Pipeline, McGregor can be seen in both stills and video shooting an action scene with Robbie herself. In another new image offered up by Harley Quinn Updates, the whole Birds of Prey team is assembled and ready for action. See the images below (more images and video can be seen by hitting the Hollywood Pipeline link):

The new images and video coming from Hollywood Pipeline offer up a very intriguing look at what appears to be a key action scene involving Black Mask and Harley Quinn. In the shots, McGregor’s character can be seen seated in the back of a vintage car brandishing a gun while Robbie is on the outside of the vehicle. Interestingly, Robbie is fixed to a harness, so there must be some wire-work going on in the sequence. In a few of the shots, McGregor’s face looks glaringly white – almost like he’s wearing Joker makeup – but in other shots his skin tone appears normal so the extra whiteness must be the result of bright lights on his face.

More intriguingly, a few of the shots show someone who looks to be Basco’s Cassandra Cain riding in the car with McGregor. The movie’s plot indeed reportedly involves the Birds of Prey becoming Cain’s protector after she comes into possession of a rare diamond that belongs to Black Mask. The images from Hollywood Pipeline seem to show Black Mask trying to make off with Cain, and Harley Quinn perhaps coming to her rescue. It’s worth noting that the shots do not show McGregor in his actual Black Mask mask (a recent fan image imagined what the character’s mask might look like on a teaser poster). The shots also show Robbie in a slightly different costume than what has been before, and also wearing roller skates.

This latest round of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) set images definitely show that Robbie’s Harley Quinn is, as expected, solidly at the center of the movie’s action. It will be interesting to see how the apparent showdown between Quinn and Black Mask plays out on the big screen.
