Stranger Things Makeup Artist Shares the Secrets Behind Cara Buono’s Pool-Proof Eye Look

Warning: Spoilers for Stranger Things Season 3

While binge-watching season 3 of Stranger Things, many questions like — how does Mrs. Wheeler aka Cara Buono‘s perfectly bold, 80’s eye makeup stay put after a dip in the pool — might arise.

Amy Forsythe, the series’ makeup artist, revealed that she created the colorful look on Buono’s character, Karen Wheeler, for her poolside flirt scene with lifeguard-turned-Mind Flayer-host, Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery). The look had viewers’ heads turning when it barely budged after she went underwater during a scene in the first episode.

One secret, Forsythe told Vulture, was leveraging the use of setting sprays and primers in multiple layers, as well as waterproof mascara because she “didn’t want [Cara] looking messy.”

“If the eye shadow went down a notch from going under, I was okay with that, since we could always put more on between takes. But the rest of the face had to be intact,” she said.

For the actual eye shadow — a blend of bright colors perfect for the aesthetic that embodied the summer of 1985 — Forsythe and other makeup artists used mostly MAC palettes and relied on that fact that Buono “barely goes under the water” for her pool scene.

“We wanted to see what would organically happen as far as how the makeup stays,” she said — and luckily, her team’s wish was granted.

“It’s not as fake as it looks!” Forsythe said of the makeup in the dripping scene where Karen and Billy share a flirty exchange about setting up a rendezvous that never comes to fruition. “The colors that we used are very vibrant, but to make it look that high-pigmented, we had to pack it on a little bit thicker than what we’re used to.”

“You do see a little bit of water going through her cheeks. I love that!” she raved to Vulture. “You see a layer there that she puts on.”

Forsythe said she “wanted Cara to have the most color” of the women she sat poolside with, who all got gussied up on the daily just to wait for the moment a shirtless Billy would walk out from the locker rooms to take up his post at the lifeguard stand.

“We have a ton of research that we pull before the show starts. We had TV Guides and cosmetic ads and movie posters and magazine clippings,” she said explaining the inspiration behind Karen’s look.

Luckily, that specific bit of makeup magic only had to last a short amount of time in the episode.

The makeup guru concluded, “The great thing with Cara’s character is we got to do something cool with her because it was a temporary moment, not something we have to carry through the whole show.”

Kylie Jenner’s Daughter Stormi Is ’100% Okay’ After A Day In The Hospital

Kylie Jenner said she feels “blessed beyond words” after spending the day at the hospital with her 16-month-old daughter Stormi Webster

Jenner revealed on Sunday that her toddler was hospitalized due to an allergic reaction. She reflected about the scary incident in moving Instagram story posts.

“Blessed beyond words,” the makeup mogul wrote alongside a video of her backyard. “Thank you God. I believe in being a reflection of what you’d like to receive. If you want love, give love. If you want success, wish success.”

Jenner then recounted the ordeal, and said her daughter is “100% okay now and back home.”

“Nothing else matters when these things happen,” Jenner wrote next to a picture of Stormi asleep in her arms. “God bless all the moms with sick babies. I’m sending so much love and positive energy your way.”

Jenner didn’t reveal what caused Stormi’s allergic reaction, but we know she has quite the adventurous palate for a youngster.

The reality TV star previously revealed some of her daughter’s favorite foods, including sushi, but she made sure to mention she doesn’t feed her child anything raw.

Stormi “just loves edamame” at the family’s favorite restaurant Nobu, Jenner said last week. “They’ll bring the whole thing of edamame. She will not stop until they’re all gone. She’ll eat a whole bowl of soy sauce rice.”

Jenner, who welcomed her daughter with rapper Travis Scott in February 2018, has hinted that she’s ready to continue growing her family.

In a birthday post dedicated to the “Astroworld” rapper in April, she wrote that the two should “f**k around and have another baby.” She added that watching Scott “evolve into the partner, friend, son, and father you are today has been so fulfilling.”

“I get out [to golf] occasionally, but not quite as much,” Verlander, 35, said with a laugh, as seen in video footage shared by USA TODAY. “[Having a baby] definitely changes the afternoons a little bit.”

It’s worth the trade-off, though. As he explained of his daughter, “I get pretty excited to go home and see her smiling. It seems like every day it’s something new, so it’s been a lot of fun.”

Verlander and Upton, 26, are no doubt into the full swing of parenting now, but the beginning had a few bumps — starting right after their first child was born.

“We were going back and forth even in the hospital,” Upton told Extra last month about the indecision surrounding their daughter’s name. “Justin had some real name-commitment issues. I actually just kind of left him on his own.”

“He knew Genevieve was my favorite, so I just left him to fill out the paperwork. I was like, ‘I can’t deal with that right now,’ ” she explained.

Upton seems to have the whole parenting/romance balance down. On Thursday, she gave an honest look at new motherhood in a candid selfie on Instagram.

The supermodel — seemingly in full makeup, with her hair styled for the evening — could be seen using a breast pump in the snapshot, with her top pulled up and bra visible above a pretty pink skirt.

“Valentine’s Day dinner pregame #JustKeepPumpin,” Upton cheekily captioned the image.
